WHY PALLET WRAP BREAKS
A troubleshooting guide for film, equipment, storage and pallet-load problems.
Frequent breaks are not always caused by micron
Film breaks can result from the film itself, incorrect machine settings, damaged rolls, sharp load edges, poor storage or excessive stretch. Increasing micron without identifying the cause can raise packaging cost without solving the underlying problem.
Common causes
- Sharp corners or protruding products
- Incorrect pre-stretch or tension settings
- Damaged roll edges
- Film stored in excessive heat or direct sunlight
- Incorrect roll specification for the machine
- Inconsistent application technique
- Insufficient puncture resistance for the load
What to record before changing film
- Product and pallet weight
- Hand or machine wrapping
- Machine model and pre-stretch system
- Current width, micron and roll length
- Break location and frequency
- Number of revolutions or film consumption per pallet
- Photographs of the load and damaged film
